Privacy policy

BowerBird does not collect, transmit, or sell your browsing data. It installs without permission to read any website, and asks for a single site only when you choose to hide an element on that site.

The short version

  • No analytics in the extension. No telemetry. No crash reporting.
  • No account. There is nothing to sign up for.
  • Page content is never uploaded. Analysis happens on your own machine.
  • One network call exists in the entire extension, and only if you buy Pro: sending your license key to our server to check it is valid.

Permissions, and why each one exists

PermissionWhy it is needed
declarativeNetRequestLets the browser apply our ad and tracker blocking rules itself. The extension never sees your requests - it only supplies the rule list. This is what makes blocking possible without site access.
storageSaves your rules and settings on your device.
scriptingApplies your hiding rules to pages you have granted access to.
activeTabGives temporary access to the current tab when you click the toolbar icon or use the right-click menu. It expires when you leave the tab.
contextMenusAdds the right-click entry used to start the element picker.
Optional site accessRequested per site, from your click, only when you hide your first element there. Revocable at any time in settings.

There is no host_permissions entry in our manifest. That is why the install prompt does not ask to read and change your data on all websites. You can verify this before installing.

What is stored, and where

  • Your hiding rules and rule profiles: in your browser, in IndexedDB, on your device.
  • Your settings and per-site state: in Chrome extension storage, which syncs across your own Chrome profile if you have Chrome sync on.
  • Your Pro license key and its signed token: in Chrome extension storage.
  • None of this is readable by us. We have no server that receives it.

The one network call

If you buy Pro, activating your key sends the key itself to our licensing server, which returns a signed token. After that the token is checked on your device with no network involved, so Pro keeps working offline. We store the license key and the purchase email that our payment processor gives us. Nothing else. No browsing data is attached to that request.

The Declutter feature

Declutter examines the page in your browser and never transmits it. Where your hardware provides an on-device language model, short descriptions of candidate elements are passed to that model locally. Where it does not, the same candidates are described using built-in rules. In both cases nothing leaves your machine, and this is enforced by an automated check in our build rather than by policy alone.

Payments

Purchases are handled by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as merchant of record and handles payment details. We never see your card. Their privacy policy governs that transaction.

Website analytics

Our website may use privacy-respecting analytics that do not track you across sites. The extension itself contains no analytics of any kind.

Children

BowerBird is not directed at children under 13 and collects no personal data from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the updated date above changes and the new version is published here before it takes effect.
